Smok last year had one of the biggest selling mods in the Smok MAG. Featuring a battery MAG design and trigger fire button, it was controversial but it was well received. So Smok are back with the newly redesigned MAG Grip, with a new comfortable design and paired the the brand new Baby V2 tank. Improving the functionality with the chip set, better tank and more comfortable design, simply dropping a battery in the process. How does the MAG Grip match up to its predecessor and more importantly, have Smok released another must have device?

About the SMOK MAG Grip
The MAG Grip kit is a single 21700/18650 powered device partnered up with the new Baby V2 tank.
The MAG Grip is a single battery device capable of powering up to 100w with a single 21700 or 85W with a single 18650. The device is a handle shaped design that has deviated from the original gun handle and displays more like a remote control joystick. The device comes with a cylinder battery magazine released via the button found on the device. It has a top based screen with 2 navigation buttons and a trigger found on the body of the mod. Operating the device is through 5 clicks to lock the device and 3 clicks to take you into the menu with mode (watt/Temp options), puff counter, settings and power on/off.
The Baby V2 is the latest sub ohm tank released by SMOK that aims to give bigger and better vaping experience. It has a 5mil capacity with a top button release to reveal a kidney shaped fill hole on top. It has a replaceable 810 drip tip, bottom adjustable airflow and comes in at around 25mm as standard. The tank comes with 2 baby v2 coils, rated V1 0.15 ohm single mesh (40-80W) and V2 strip mesh rated 0.15 ohm (30w-70W)
SMOK MAG Grip Pros
The first pro for me with the MAG Grip is how comfortable it is to hold in your hand, which is a massive improvement on the original. The thinner body and top to cover your hand, it resembles a handle rather than a gun stock. This is very comfortable and the placed fire button makes it easy and enjoyable to fire the device. The device responds really well, quick firing and accurate in power compared to the slight power discrepancy on the original. Battery life is around 4-5 hours with a single 21700 which is a great length for a single battery device when used regularly, above average in my experience so not an all day device but a session device as it were. The simple menu system is another big pro for me, simply holding the trigger to select options and improved menu system makes it very easy to use the device. The device has space on top for up to 30? mm tanks so another pro for me there, certainly the 25mm baby v2 is just sat directly in the middle of the base so plenty of room around it. Build quality on the device is really good, it feels solid and like it would survive a fall or two, with the hardened screen again an improvement on the previous design.
The Smok Baby V2 is a wonderful packaged tank and it delivers nice flavour and lovely cloud production at around 70-75w. The fill hole is nice and easy to use, coil life is at around 2 weeks plus before there is a drop in performance and overall the tank with its big capacity is efficient in utilising juice consumption.
SMOK MAG Grip Cons
The battery decrease is a con for the device as it reduces the battery life from the original to around half a day less. The 21700 performs well and can deliver 4-5 hours off a single charge but the all day predecessor was much more useful for an all day vaper. I am not a fan of the 5 clicks to lock the device, preferably I would prefer that to turn the device off with no real way to do that on the go, instead having to access the menu system to do that. Finally, compared to the original, the device is a little heavy despite the size and more compact nature. This was a big surprise for me when trying the mod out.
The Baby tank does have a more subdued flavour compared to others on the market and as a result you are going to get a smooth flavourful vape without the intensity of the best on the market. A nice tank in the kit but not for a stand alone tank in my opinion. The airflow is a little wide for the coils it comes with and it does demand a bigger coil to utilise this, perhaps this also contributes to the drop in flavour.
Overall
The MAG Grip in all ways is a massive improvement on the original in every way except for capabilities. What I mean by that is that the better chip set, more refined design and ease of use are all wonderful changes but you do lose the extended battery life and higher wattage capabilities than the original MAG. So it is easy to think of this less of a sequel and more of a more portable version of the MAG, for that it is absolutely fantastic. One of those devices that may not last all day on a single charge of the battery but with its unique design and fantastic performance, it may well be a good choice for you.
